The Critical Analyst
Thinking Abstractly: Analyzing Texts and Finding Hidden Meanings

- Identify the Theme: Look beyond the plot to find the "big idea" or message about life the author wants you to take away (e.g., the importance of courage or the challenges of friendship).
- Analyze Character Development: Pay attention to how the main characters change from the beginning of the story to the end. What events caused them to change?
- Understand Point of View: Ask, "Who is telling this story?" Think about how the story would be different if it were told from another character's perspective.
- Recognize Figurative Language: Notice when the author uses "word pictures" like similes and metaphors. How do these descriptions make the text more interesting or powerful?
- Question the Text: As you read, especially non-fiction, think like a critic. Ask: "Is this a fact or an opinion? Who wrote this, and are they a reliable source?"
- Connect Reading to the World: Discuss how ideas or events in a text relate to current events or things you've learned in other subjects. This makes reading more relevant.
