Reading to Learn
The Turning Point: Where Reading Becomes Learning

- Read Aloud: Practice reading the passage aloud to yourself. This helps you catch tricky words and hear the flow of the sentences, which improves understanding.
- Use Word Clues: If you find a word you don't know, read the sentences around it. Often, the other words (context clues) can help you figure out its meaning.
- Find the Main Idea: After reading, ask yourself: "What is the single most important point the author wanted me to learn?"
- Ask "I Wonder" Questions: Let your curiosity lead the way! As you read, ask questions like, "I wonder why that happened?" or "I wonder what the character is thinking?"
- Keep a Word Journal: When you learn a new word, write it down in a notebook. Try to use it in a sentence later that day.
- Reread for Clarity: Teach yourself that all good readers reread parts they don't understand. It's a smart strategy, not a mistake.
- Read Different Genres: Explore more than just stories. Try reading simple biographies, science articles, and poems to see how different kinds of texts work.
