Grade 2
Becoming a Story Investigator
From Fluent Reading to True Comprehension

- Make Predictions: After reading the title, pause and guess what you think will happen next. This gets your brain ready to look for clues.
- Picture It in Your Mind: As you read, create a movie in your imagination. What do the characters, places, and events look like?
- Retell the Story: In your own words, explain what happened at the beginning, middle, and end. This is a great way to check if you understood the main parts of the story.
- Ask "Why?": Start asking questions that go deeper. "Why do you think the character made that choice?" This builds critical thinking.
- Read Independently: Set aside a quiet, cozy time to read on your own. This helps build reading "stamina" and makes you a more confident reader.
- Summarize Sections: Try summarizing short sections. After a paragraph, can you say what it was mostly about in one sentence?
- Look for the "Who, What, Where, When": As you read, keep an eye out for the key details that answer these important questions.
