Grade 3: The Idea Finder
Spot the Main Idea and Understand Passages
Help your child discover the big idea behind every passage and build deeper understanding.
- Read Again for Clarity: The first time you read it, you get the main idea; the second time, you get the deeper meaning. Re-reading difficult sentences helps you understand them better.
- Find New Words: Check the meaning of a word if it seems confusing. You can learn new words quickly and get a better understanding of the passage by using a dictionary.
- Find the Main Idea: Ask yourself, "What is the main point of this passage?" Find important facts that back up that main idea.
- Try To Predict: Before you turn the page or read the next paragraph, make a guess about what will happen next.
- Look at Word Endings: Endings like -ful, -less, -ment, and -tion help you understand the meaning. Notice them to learn faster.
- Encourage quick re-reads: Allow them to read short passages (one paragraph or a few lines) to improve fluency and understanding.
- Gain confidence in words: Have a simple dictionary close by, or use an online one that is easy for kids to use. When your child learns a new word, let them look up its meaning and how the suffix changes it.
- Talk About the Main Point: After reading, ask kids, "What was the main point of the passage?" This helps them learn how to find the main ideas and important supporting details.
- Make Predicting a Habit: Ask your child what they think will happen next. This helps them think critically, stay interested, and remember what they read.
