Your Reading Adventure Begins

Building a Strong Foundation for Lifelong Readers
Grade 1
  • Start with the Title: The title is your first clue! Read it together and guess what the story might be about.
  • Point to the Words: Use your finger to follow along as you read. This helps your eyes stay on track and connect spoken words to written words.
  • Read with a Buddy: Reading with a grown-up or an older friend is a great way to get help with tricky words and share the fun of the story.
  • Talk About It: When you finish, have a simple chat. Who were the main characters? What happened at the beginning and at the end?
  • Connect Stories to Your Life: Relate what happens in a story to your own experiences. "The character felt sad. Do you remember a time you felt sad?" This makes reading more meaningful.
  • Master Sight Words: Practice common words (like "the," "is," "a") until you know them by heart. This frees up your brain to focus on the story's meaning.
  • Act It Out: After reading, try acting out the story. This is a playful way to remember the order of events and understand how the characters feel.
