Grade 1: The Word Finder

Foundations for Reading Success

Help children learn sounds, understand new words, and fall in love with reading with every story they read.
Grade 1: The Word Finder
  • Don't rush: Take your time and say each word out loud. There is no need to hurry; understanding comes first!
  • One Sentence at a Time: Think for a moment "what each sentence means". This helps you remember what happened in the story.
  • Picture the Story: Think about the people, places, and things that come to mind. Pretend you're watching a movie!
  • Ask questions: Think about Who are the people in the story? Where is it happening? What's going on? What do you think is happening?
  • Check yourself: Read it again if it's hard to understand. Good readers always check twice to make sure they understand everything.
  • Have a good time: Have fun with the story, laugh at the funny parts, and be proud of every little thing you do well. Reading is more fun when you like it!
  • Start with the Title: Discuss the title with your child to give him or her a clue of what the story could be.
  • Help Them Visualise: Help your children visualize characters and setting whilst reading.
  • Use Finger Tracking: Remind them to use their finger to follow words so that they remain focused.
  • Ask Simple Questions: After reading, ask the question: Who did the story have? What happened? Where did it take place?
  • Re-Read When Needed: When your child finds something confusing, read it aloud again.
